Have You Ever Watched a Spiny Orb-Weaver?

This colorful species of spider, often referred to as a crab spider, is a fun spider to watch. It is quite colorful with its red spikes and distinct black and white body. And, the web it weaves is an interesting pinwheel of light white threads. For some people, watching these tiny spiders do their work is quite relaxing. What type of person are you?

If you're the type of person who likes to watch spiny orb-weavers scramble around, building their web, and capturing their prey, we understand. These spiders are no threat to you. And, they are actually beneficial to have around. These tiny spiders eat bees, wasps, mosquitoes, and flies. While they are certainly no replacement for pest control measures, they are at least trying to help. Along with this, they are one of many species of spiders native to Florida.

If you are the type of person who doesn't like to accidentally walk through a spider web on the way to put the trash out on the curb, don't care for creepy little spiked spiders, and prefer your home to be free of cobwebs, then we have some ideas that may help.

Spider Control Tips

  • When you reduce flying insects, you reduce spiders. One of the ways you can reduce flying insects is to keep exterior lights turned off at night, and by keeping shades closed. If you need light, for security reasons, consider replacing outside white bulbs with yellow insect-resistant bulbs.
  • Flying insects are attracted to trash. If you have external trash cans, make sure they make a good seal. Fewer flies means fewer spiders.
  • If you have a bug zapper, you may want to consider getting rid of it, especially if you got it to kill mosquitoes. A recent study showed that, while bug zappers are good at drawing mosquito in, they are only effective at killing male (nonbiting) mosquitoes. And, if you are drawing mosquitoes onto your property, you'll have more reasons for spiny orb-weavers to hang around.
  • If you have flowers on your porch or deck, you are likely to have bees, wasps, and hornets paying you a visit. The more stinging insects you have, the more spiders you'll have. It is probably not an option to get rid of those beautiful flowers, but you may consider having a pest control company remove any stinging insect nests on your property, to reduce their numbers.
